OVERVIEW

This was an individual project for the Drawing Fundamental class at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Inspired by William Kentridge and his animation work on political processions. I wanted to create a stop motion to illustrate the lonely battle of a democracy activist against the tyranny of the dictatorship.

Creative Process

Started with overlapping life drawings with charcoal on craft paper, I sketched out the basic human figures. I was hoping to cut them out and maneuver the limbs for each frame.

However there was not enough space to setup the tripod properly in my studio, so I took pictures of the the craft paper, scaled it down and printed them out on A4 paper. Fun fact, the blue shades was resulted of lower printer ink level, but I liked how it added some doomsday mystery blues to the story.

It took about two hours to capture each movement and another hour to piece them together as a video. I’m pretty happy with the end result. Will likely experiment stop motion again with a different media, maybe clay or lego pieces :)
